Any chance I can get Dominican cake (which is rare), I'm there. And when hubs had to take care of some real estate business on a recent Sunday a few minutes away from here, I tagged along for the ride. Hubs did his thing and I came to this Dominican bakery on Amsterdam Ave in Washington Hgts. But I have to thank my class TA for actually bringing me a slice from here and my reason for being here. Dominican cake recipes vary from baker to baker. Some, will make a moist cake that'll make you lick the plate quick. Others skimp on the correct cake flour ratio and add corn meal to 'stretch' the entire mix which will end with a gross, horrific and crumbly cake. Not here. To top it all off, Dominican frosting- or 'suspiro' (English: meringue) has the correct amount of eggs whites+sugar+vanilla extract and a wonderful swirly peak when the meringue is all done. Angela's Cakes, are moist, buttery, has: the perfect amount of vanilla extract, sugar- that won't make an expertly-done cake too sweet or short of sugar that ends bland, right amount of eggs, etc. These folks nailed the cake AND frosting! This bakery is spacious, has a few high chairs if you're waiting for any of your items, cake number toppers, special occasion toppers, shimmery cake trays, etc. I, had one mission and it didn't include any of that. I only came for individual pieces- but if you're ordering for special occasions like Baptism, Birthdays, Bridal/Baby Showers, etc, do it wayyy in advance and make sure you stay in contact with someone here leading up to your event. I know my people- and there will be some sort of confusion. I had gotten 3 cake slices to share with my Mom, give one to my TA and one for me. The first two had a chunky pineapple marmalade that was the perfect cake addition and the Guayaba (aka guava) filling in my piece, took it to another level. I totally get the uptight service. Again, I know my people. A smile and courtesy goes a long way- but price, was nice at almost $4ea.

No matter how old you are we all love to relive the best parts of our childhood. I've heard stories that you can't have a birthday party without a Dominican Guava cake. Guava filling for some and pineapple for others. Or there's always the option of half of one filling and half of the other in one cake. There's also a Dulce de Leche filling as an option. Either choice gives you a moist, double layered, sweet filled cake. At Angela's and similar other Dominican bakeries, their prices are based on weight. This 1 pounder cost $45.00 which can serve a good portion to 20-25 people. If you've never had a Dominican cake the frosting is not the traditional cream frosting, it's more along the lines of a foam creamed texture. That's the best way I can describe it. Which it isn't bad, it's just different from what I'm accustomed to. End result is the cake was a hit. All were happy and the birthday babies were able to get that once a year trip down childhood memory lane. Until the next visit Angela. Tips: If you want your cake ready by 4:00pm, tell them you need it by 1:00pm Miscommunications are an unfortunate given. Reconfirming your order is an absolute must the day before and the day of. Instead of asking you the name of your order, the first thing they will ask is, 'what color is the cake?' If you don't know the color you'll be screwed because the color seems to be more important than the name of the person who ordered the cake. Credit cards accepted.
